Capturing Chloe, Katrina Kell
Katrina Kell is the author of two YA novels Juice (2000) and Mama’s Trippin (2006), both published by Fremantle Press. She recently completed her PhD, her creative thesis, a historical novel inspired by the famous painting in Melbourne’s Young & Jackson Bar. Capturing Chloe traces Chloe’s impact on an Australian family during World War One as well as Chloe’s life in the aftermath of the Second French Empire and the Franco-Prussian War. I got to know Katy well because our postgrad offices were across the corridor from each other and we were often the only people in the ghostly corridor. I met Sarah Mokryzcki at the postgrad AAWP workshop. Sarah sat a few seats away from me and during a coffee break, we struck up a conversation about Melbourne, where she is based, and about her foster children who inspired her research. I have always been in awe of foster parents because all the ones I know are these amazingly generous people who have unquantifiable amounts of love to give to the vulnerable children who need safe homes. I went to Melbourne for the Deborah Cass award night and to catch up with friends. The Deborah Cass award is open to anyone who was born overseas or has at least one parent born overseas —so that’s a large chunk of the population who qualify for entry. Karina Ko was the winner of this year’s prize, I was runner-up and Su-May Tan was second runner-up. The judges couldn’t make it but the winner and runner-up of the inaugural prize Moreno Giovonnoni and Melanie Cheng were there. AAWP Conference, Perth
Earlier this year, I had no idea what I was doing with my life after I stopped studying and working at the university. I welcomed the break but felt rather insecure as I’ve always been tethered to an institution or a project, or a paid job. The only plan I had post-MA was to submit an abstract for this year’s AAWP conference since it was going to be held in my hometown and I’m so glad that I did!
